NOMACORC Pops: Precise Oxygen Management to Preserve the Delicate Profile of Sparkling Wines

Reduced desorption and improved permeability: NOMACORC Pops protects the sensory profile of sparkling wines when they are most sensitive to oxygen, ensuring that the wine in the glass remains true to the winemaker’s intention.
Vinventions is further enhancing NOMACORC Pops, its synthetic closure for sparkling wines, by improving control over oxygen ingress after bottling.
This development addresses two phenomena simultaneously. The first is desorption, the release of oxygen contained within the closure after bottling. The second is permeability, the gradual transmission of oxygen through the closure over time.
Targeted Performance for Sparkling Wines
Research conducted by the Comité Champagne has highlighted the importance of desorption: a cork-based closure can release between 2.5 and 2.7 mg of oxygen into the bottle during the first three months. This oxygen ingress after disgorgement can cause oxidative shock and influence the wine’s sensory evolution. Controlling this oxygen contribution is therefore essential to preserving the freshness and aromatic profile of sparkling wines.
With NOMACORC Pops, Vinventions is further improving control over both phenomena that determine closure oxygen ingress:
- Desorption is almost eliminated: co-extruded under an inert gas atmosphere and then packaged in nitrogen-flushed bags until use on the bottling line, the closure contains virtually no oxygen to release into the wine during the first weeks after bottling.
- Permeability is reduced: thanks to a new formulation developed by Vinventions’ R&D teams, the closure’s Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) has been reduced
we are giving producers the means to better preserve the freshness and aromatic expression of their wines.
Unique Expertise in Oxygen Management
Oxygen management lies at the heart of Vinventions’ expertise, which began more than 20 years ago with academic research aimed at understanding the impact of oxygen on wine evolution. Since then, this expertise has been guided by the same approach: measure, understand and control.
In 2007, Vinventions’ Oenology team developed NomaSense O₂, a tool designed to measure oxygen levels in wine and closure permeability. As early as 2011, its teams published a mathematical model describing the behaviour of cylindrical closures, identifying desorption and permeability as two interconnected phenomena. That same year, Vinventions launched the first cylindrical closure treated to reduce desorption.
However, the closure is not the only source of oxygen. At bottling, dissolved oxygen (DO) in the wine and oxygen present in the headspace (HSO) together make up Total Package Oxygen (TPO), which can vary significantly from one bottling line to another. This comprehensive approach to oxygen management is what sets Vinventions’ expertise apart.
This understanding has guided our research for many years and now enables us to tailor our solutions very precisely to the needs of different wine profiles.
NOMACORC Pops Retains Its Proven Benefits
All other oenological and environmental performance characteristics of NOMACORC Pops remain unchanged: sensorial neutrality, freedom from TCA, unparalleled closure-to-closure consistency thanks to co-extrusion technology, and the use of bio-based materials.
Its design also eliminates issues associated with cork-based closures, such as crumbling or the detachment of cork discs.
NOMACORC Pops retains its customisable design and remains available with either symmetrical or asymmetrical chamfers.
