Vinventions recently commissioned a new carbon footprint study for their Nomacorc Green Line range of closures. This was done in accordance with the ISO standard 14067:2018 as requested by the most recent environmental legislation on anti-greenwashing behaviours. With the last study completed in 2014, this analysis confirms that these closures remain the only Net Zero Carbon Footprint products in this market segment.

Sustainability is central to Vinventions’ core beliefs and heavily influences its strategic decisions. Sustainable Development, which is based on verifiable facts, serves as a guiding principle within Vinventions, guaranteeing the group’s environmental integrity and credibility in the wine closure market. Vinventions commissioned RDC Environment to conduct a comprehensive carbon footprint study of their Nomacorc Green Line product line and South Pole for the 3rd-party review & certification.

NOMACORC GREEN LINE: A MAJOR INNOVATION

Every closure from the Nomacorc Green Line (Smart Green, Classic Green, Select Green, and Reserva) are produced from sustainable and renewable raw materials, derived from sugarcane.
The product line, which was inspired by the company’s strong desire for innovation, sustainability, and continuous improvement, offers major advances in terms of performance, aesthetics, and sustainability of wine closures. Beyond being Net Zero Carbon Footprint, the Green Line also guarantees TCA-free wine closures, precise oxygen management, and perfect consistency, eliminating bottle-to-bottle variations.

ANALYSIS CARRIED OUT IN ACCORDANCE WITH CURRENT STANDARDS

Vinventions selected RDC Environment for the calculation of the Nomacorc Green Line carbon footprint according to the ISO 14067:2018 standard. Founded in 1992, RDC boasts a team of 25 engineers and economists, all of whom are enthusiastic advocates of sustainable development and specialists in life cycle assessment.
For the Nomacorc Green Line closures, the Net Zero Carbon Footprint evaluation encompassed a cradle-to-grave analysis. It calculated carbon impact of raw materials and shipment to their production site in Thimister Belgium, the impact of their closure production, the distribution to European wineries, and ultimately the impact of end of life management of the closures.

CALCULATION

Each closure from the Green Line is different, generating different results. However, all the analysed closures from this product line have a negative carbon footprint ranging from –0.4 g CO2eq (for Smart Green closures) to –1.3 g CO2eq (for Select Green 300 closures).
“We have been using Nomacorc Green Line closures since 2020. We chose the Select Green and Reserva closures to preserve the aromatic qualities of our wines. The net carbon-neutral footprint of these closures supports our overall carbon footprint reduction goals. We are extremely pleased to now have an updated scientific study to substantiate our claims and to continue communicating to our customers about the environmental performance of the chosen closure.“ Luc Flache, Director, Les Caves de l’Estabel – Cabrières.

CONCLUSION

When following the ISO 14067:2018 standard as requested by the most recent environmental legislation on anti-greenwashing behaviours, Nomacorc Smart Green, Classic Green, Select Green, and Reserva stand out as the only wine closures currently on the market with a net zero carbon footprint.
